 In the summer of 2007, Thelma Boeder decided to establish the "Ballinger Boeder Endowment for Collections and Historic Sites" with the Minnesota Historical Society.
Thelma chose this way of expressing her deep commitment to the Society's mission especially in its efforts to preserve Minnesota's historic sites and its preservation work as exemplified in the work of the Collections department.
In describing her journey to appreciating the work of the Society, Thelma says, "I believe my interest in history comes strongly from the Kings, Grandma Ballinger's family. I particularly remember a visit when I was about nine years old. My parents and I stopped to see Great-uncle Clarence King, Grandma's brother. In the course of the visit, he showed us old family letters sent from England in the 1830s. He began reading them to us. I listened closely. A visit with an older relative had just changed from acceptable to fascinating."
Thelma continued her education in her chosen field of library science but became fascinated in archives and eventually received master's degrees in both Library Science and History.
Describing her love of history she writes, "Doing history is a major activity in my life at this point, some of it similar to the research and archive work I have done for years. Added to that, I also interpret several eras more directly. I reenact the fur trade era in Minnesota (c. 1800-c.1840) with a club, La Compagnie des Hivernants de la Riviere St. Pierre. I volunteer at Dakota City (1900) in Farmington, conducting tours and teaching in the one-room school."
Through the "Ballinger Boeder Endowment for Collections and Historic Sites," Thelma will continue to express her love for history in perpetuity.
